IBM Insight has been the premiere data management and analytics event for IBM analytics technologies, and 2016 is no exception.  This year, IBM Insight is being hosted along with World of Watson and runs from October 24 to 27, 2016 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.  It includes 1,500 sessions across a range of technologies and features keynotes by IBM President and CEO, Ginni Rometty; Senior Vice President of IBM Analytics, Bob Picciano; and other IBM Analytics and industry leaders.  Every year, we include a little fun as well, and this year the band is Imagine Dragons.

IBM data warehousing sessions will be available across the event as well as in the PureData System for Analytics Enzee Universe (Sunday, October 23).  Below are product-specific quick reference guides that enable you to see at a glance key sessions and activities, then plan your schedule.  Print these guides and take them with you or put the links to them on your phone for reference during the conference.

This year, the Expo floor is called the Cognitive Concourse, and we are located in the Monetizing Data section, Cognitive Cuisine experience area.  We’ll take you on a tour across our data warehousing products and will have some fun as we do it, so please stop by.  There is also a demo room where you can see live demos and engage with our technical experts, as well as a series of hands-on labs that let you experience our products directly.

Enzee Universe is a full day of dedicated PureData System for Analytics / Netezza sessions that is held on Sunday, October 23, 2016.  To register for Enzee Universe, select sessions 3459 and 3461 in the agenda builder tool.  This event is open to any full conference pass holder.

Data Warehousing and Analytics in the Cloud — A Guide for Insight Attendees

IBM Insight, the premier conference for Big Data and Analytics is just around the corner, and sessions will include material on all of our data management solutions including DB2 with BLU Acceleration, and of course the PureData System for Analytics based on Netezza technology (which incidentally, just released a new version, the N3001!).

Warehousing and Analytics in the Cloud, however, is a horse of a different color.  Yes, it’s still data warehousing, and yes, it’s still analytics, but it differs from traditional on-premises solutions in several key ways:

  • Cloud agility means rapid provisioning (think hours, not days)
  • Pay-as-you-go models mean a shift to operational expense rather than capital expense
  • “as a Service” means that end-users don’t worry about infrastructure, but can focus on business applications and problems

In short, cloud lets you focus on the business, rather than the business of IT, which is a very powerful message.

Almost everyone who is considering cloud already has on-premises systems, of course, so it is critical that a cloud-based solution play well not only for born-in-the-cloud applications, but also with the existing ground-based solutions we all know and love.  And that’s the promise of a properly architected and well thought out cloud based service for warehousing and analytics — portability!  The ability to use the same applications, tools, and analytic algorithms on the ground or in the cloud is what enables hybrid flexibility.

We used to look at the logical data warehouse as comprising both traditional structured database technologies and newer NoSQL technologies like Hadoop and streaming computing.   Now we are extending that to include new deployment options as well.  Databases and NoSQL, ground to cloud, all treated as a logical cohesive whole.

DB2 BLU in Action at Northwestern Mutual

Achieving financial security is a numbers game. Correction, it’s an analytics game. Investment returns go up, and they go down. Risk goes up, and it goes down. Achieving the right balance of returns vs. risk is a never-ending game of analyzing data from countless data sources, and matching data analytics and investment choices to the specific goals and risk profiles of an individual, a family or a business. But it’s a very serious game that directly affects people and businesses today, and what they can do tomorrow.

Northwestern Mutual helps individuals, families and businesses achieve financial security. The company wanted to improve their already impressive data analytics and provide faster insights to decision makers. Data warehousing ‘origins’

Data warehousing was conceptualized in the late 1980’s by IBM researchers to address the problems associated with the flow of data from transactional systems to decision support systems. Since then it has become an important asset for businesses worldwide as it supports analysis, reporting and other business intelligence functions by providing a single, comprehensive source of current and historical information.

RIP, Data warehouse?

With the advent of big data, the importance of the traditional data warehouse is in no way diminished; in fact, increasingly it is being recognized as a foundational building block for an effective big data and analytics strategy. The modern data warehouse can be thought of as an engine for analytics turning data into information and insight.

The current state of data warehousing technology

The first generation of data warehouses were built on Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS).  This generation was limited by its ability to handle heavy I/O demanded from users accessing large data volumes. However, today businesses want that their analytic databases generate insight from data more quickly than ever before. A number of new technologies have emerged to overcome this and other weaknesses including in-memory database technology and Netezza analytic appliance technology.

Another issue faced by companies is the reliance on business analysts/data scientists to manage the complexities associated with data acquisition, cleansing and dissemination.  However, companies are facing a large supply gap of data analytics talent. This might result in analysis being late in coming or not coming at all and business users taking decisions without it. This is where technologies like IBM Watson come into play.

Internet of Things (IoT) and Informix at IBM Insight 2014

IBM Insight (TAFKA “Information on Demand” or IoD) is quickly approaching. In case you’ve missed all the recent announcements about things like Watson Analytics, there is a lot of cool new stuff going on at IBM and this year’s conference will offer some incredible learning opportunities and yes, even new insights, for attendees.

One of the products that I’ve recently been learning more about myself is Informix. I happen to be the current IBM representative on the International Informix User Group Board of Directors and, while my position in IBM Data Warehousing and Data Management has given me some visibility across all our DW/DM products, the IIUG and our Informix customers have demonstrated to me what a powerful and capable product Informix is and what tremendous business value it offers. It has also been experiencing something of a rediscovery recently because, as it turns out, some of the major strengths of Informix make it an ideal database for a rather hot new market called the “Internet of Things” (IoT).

As if Big Data wasn’t big enough with just the data that people are generating, it gets huger still with the data that non-people (like sensors) are generating. I recently installed a Dropcam at my summer house and I love tapping in and watching what is happening on the beach outside the house (or what happened last week – the high-def video stream gets stored in the cloud), no matter where I am in the world. I haven’t installed a smart thermostat yet or a smart refrigerator or any of the other smart devices that are working their way into our homes and our lives, but I can definitely see the appeal of the remote sensing and control. There are companies like Shaspa and Cisco and Intel that are betting on the rapid proliferation of smart devices by creating or enabling different pieces of the IoT fabric, like smart hubs – centralized command/control/communications for all the smart devices in the home…or in your car.

The IoT will be a hot topic at IBM Insight this year — there will be lots of opportunities for attendees to learn more about the IoT and to see how IBM products and technologies can help businesses and individuals benefit from the rising IoT tide. There will even be an IoT Hackathon going on for any conference attendees who want to take a crack at creating their own IoT application, with great prizes for the best submissions.

Obviously there will be some good breakout sessions focused on IoT and Informix as well and I will highlight just a few of them here. Unfortunately two of the sessions I want to attend myself are scheduled for the same time slot (Monday, 10/27, 10:15AM – 11:15am) so I guess I’ll have to flip a bitcoin:

  • In IWM-5982A (Banyan F), How IBM Informix Warehouse Improves Business across Industries, Vaibhav Dantale (IBM, Senior Software Engineer) and Kiran Challapalli (IBM, Informix CTE) will talk about the key benefits offered by the Informix Warehouse Accelerator (IWA), particularly in two rather interesting industries: commodity trading and medical diagnostics.
  • In IWM-6787A (South Seas J), In-Memory Query Acceleration for JSON and SQL Data, Fred Ho (IBM, Chief Technologist-Informix Warehouse) will combine several of the hottest topics in data warehousing/data management today: in-memory, MongoDB, and JSON and talk about how neat new technologies and features such as SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data), vector processing and columnar architecture allow IBM to accelerate analytics for JSON documents using the MongoDB API. You can have your existing Mongo application run against an IBM Informix and experience the high performance benefit of these features, without rewriting any code.
  • And speaking of JSON, I must also put in a plug for the session of my fellow IIUG Director, Art Kagel (ASK Database Management, President). In IDI-4213A My Data is Relational But My Coders Want to Use JSON!  Help! Art takes on the challenge that CIOs and development managers face in this new world of mixed structured/unstructured/semi-structured data and suggests there is a better way of dealing with that than frequent (and often complex) ETL, or needing to limit new applications from accessing legacy data or complicating them by requiring them to tap into multiple data sources.  Art’s session is Wednesday, 10/29, 01:45 PM – 02:45 PM in Banyan F.

About Dennis Duckworth

Dennis Duckworth, Program Director of Product Marketing for Data Management & Data Warehousing has been in the data game for quite a while, doing everything from Lisp programming in artificial intelligence to managing a sales territory for a database company. He has a passion for helping companies and people get real value out of cool technology. Dennis came to IBM through its acquisition of Netezza, where he was Director of Competitive and Market Intelligence. He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University but has spent most of his life on the East Coast.
